IDEA Project Improving Decisions through Empowerment and Advocacy: Building Children's Rights Capacity in Child Protection Systems

Prof. Ann Skelton, Director of the Centre for Child Law at the University of Pretoria, will lead the training in strategic litigation. The aim is to inform participants about the concept of strategic litigation in the area of children’s rights and its ability to bring about systemic change rather than on a case-by-case basis.

Prof. Laura Lundy, Director of the Centre for Children’s Rights at Queen’s University Belfast, will provide training on her model of child participation, which has been used widely by academics and policy makers.

Prof. David Shemmings, Co-Director of the University of Kent's Centre for Child Protection, Visiting Professor of Child Protection Research at Royal Holloway College, University of London and Director of the Attachment and Relationship-based Practice programme will deliver a training day in Ireland, Estonia, Finland, Sweden and Hungary.

his training will cover the following items:

• What is (and isn't) 'attachment'? Central myths and misconceptions about 'attachment'.
• Contemporary topics in 'attachment' and how they can inform child welfare and protection decisions. The effects of trauma on the attachment system.
• How knowledge of 'attachment' can help understand some of the complexities around contact, as well as sibling placement. How professionals tend to write about 'attachment'.
• ·What are 'attachment-based interventions'?
• Prof. Shemmings will show a number of short film clips throughout the day and there will also be plenty of opportunity for interaction and discussion.
